Pre Post Rant

I shan't keep you with this as I'm about to post a much more interesting (yeah right) item but I need to get this off my chest first so bear with me.

Those that know me here know I'm a fairly easy going idiot, perhaps a bit of a twat, but one who likes to engage with life on a lighter note (you can stop agreeing now thank you).

Recently though, I have felt the need to leave a perhaps rather terse comment on a woman's blog who was having a bit of a dig at anglers. I tried to point out that anglers and fishermen (and women, ok fisher-people then) are on the whole decent sorts who actually contribute to the welfare of the natural world and wildlife protection, contribute to the national economy, are actively engaged whole heartedly in conservation (often the ONLY people engaged in the conservation of wildlife on some stretches of water / ocean) etc.

I attempted to suggest that this individual might think hard about where that nice Cod fillet came from that they may have purchased from the chip shop the other night, how it may have met its end asphyxiating in the hold of a giant commercial fishing trawler, and how many of its mates were needlessly and wastefully killed and then thrown overboard in the name of financial gain and customer demand (come what may), click on the 'Fish Fight' banner opposite to see what I mean.

All to no avail I'm affraid as the comment was deleted within seconds of me posting it. Now, all that is left on that particular blog post is a handful of other 'like-minded' folk saying 'hear-hear', 'I agree' etc. Cake and Tea.

I had occasion to pull this individual up once before when she had another senseless dig, this time at Christians, simply because one or two of the follwers of this particular faith appeared to irritate her.

Her blog, she can write what she likes, fair enough (etc, etc.)

Anyway, rant over, moving on...

I walked past a Bangladeshi take away tonight, and the confused people inside were being harassed by an idiot outside, hammering on their window, shouting "STOP SELLING HALLAL MEAT!!!"

Sorry about this post. Since I have a bank of banners for Fish Fight, Anglers Trust, MSC etc., on this blog trying help educate the masses in responsible fisheries and stuff, I felt I had a duty to...

Some folks are just to dense to reason with! Don't let it get to you. I live my life the way I want and I no longer care what others think and really don't waste my time on narrow mined folks anymore, does that make me old and cynical, lol!I am a fisher woman and a Christian,I also eat meat that I kill myself and have guns and buy my kid guns that he hunts with...that would probably drive that woman in to a fit, lol!

Molly - No me niether. Some folk like to perform a kind of hit and run on soft targets and then plead innocence when it boomerangs back at them. Like your fish. :-)

M. - that's working!x

Tom - sorry, that was me too. Maybe I've got PMT this week.

Melodie - Too bad you're married! ;-)

Btw - anyone disagree with me here please feel free to comment. It will stay up without censorship (unless it is particularly vile, Tom)...

Coming from Nova Scotia which has a thriving fishing industry, at least until the cod disappeared but that's a whole other story, I am with you Chris on this. As in animal rearing for consumption, I have no problem when this is done responsibly.
I know the 'seal hunt' is a major bone of contention for some activists in the UK. What they fail to realize is that when done responsibly it is no different from any other. All they see is those cute little faces of the young seals. This has been the livelihood of many people in this area for hundreds of years. And besides, there are so many seals now that it is starting to deplete other fish stock as well.
I am the first to jump on a 'bandwagon' but I always try to inform myself firstly.

The throwing back of two thirds of all trawled fish is an international DISGRACE.

Jim - the actual blog post I commented on was called 'Cull and Angler Today!' so fairly unbiased then.

The issue in her text was that she disagreed with the culling of the marauding Gannet population which is habitually moving inland to hoover up freshwater fish that simply can't take this sustained onslaught. Why are they moving inland? Maybe due to overfishing. A fairly typical problem of moving the problem on to somewhere else. In this case apparently it's all the angler's fault.

Pretty, feathery bird rights over slimy, cold, wet fish rights. A case of political anthropomorphic correctness gone mad!

Cro - too right! Hope you've signed up to Hugh FW's Fish Fight (banner on the right). Every vote counts.

If your comment was a well thought counterargument I don't see why she wouldn't have published it. I have published quite a few comments I didn't agree with before - I assume people know from the little picture and name that I'm not the one who wrote it so it's not necessarily my beliefs. Sorry she got under your skin. Maybe time to stop reading that blog?

if only it were so easy that you could just politely explain! I've gotten older and alot more impatient and usually just snap or deliver a thoughtful smart ass comment. For the most part... they never get it!
Feel sorry for those and just say.."God Bless"

Fair point fella, didn't see your comment as it was deleted before I had chance to check it out. Better if it had been left on cause that's just fair argument. Wasn't trying to diss all anglers just the ones that leave their crap around and think its a shame that the wildlife get it in the neck for just living. Did think after I left my comment that fishermen probably lose their hooks when lines break thus they can't help that.

Lisa - stopped! This particular topic was/is bigger than little old me and much more important so it annoyed me enough that I left a comment.

Deb - I do and I suppose other people say that about me too LOL. I am deeply flawed though and sometimes don't present the other cheek as maybe I should.

Capt. - thanks for taking the time to comment. It's a hard battle this conservation stuff and I know most people are coming from a place of love and concern for whatever touches them most.

Like I've said above, the main problem with 'fish welfare' is that unless they are basking sharks or Nemo, the pretty coral reef fish, they are less than cuddly (sometimes downright ugly) and it's almost acceptable to choose pretty looking bird welfare over that of a common fish or fishery.

The common thread on this blog is NOT fishing for sport at all, but for the pot. I'd rather catch my fish and kill it humanely and quickly myself (provided it is mature enough) than eat a fish caught heaven knows where and with no provenance.

Saying that I acknowledge the fact that sport anglers exist and the vast majority of them are utterly committed to the preservation and welfare of all aquatic and terrestrial life. Most anglers just like to sit in the countryside anyway - we don't always catch any fish - you didn't hear me say that though, right? ;-)

I know swans , for example, get caught in fishing lines, swallow lead weights, rubbish is left sometimes. It sucks. Human nature is not always pleasant and I can't defend these aresholes nor would I want to, but to paint all anglers with such a broad dirty brush would be unfair.

Then I have to create horrible posts like this one which I hate doing as they go against the grain and theme of this blog which is generally FUN!! :-D

Its been my experience that people who protest the loudest often set the least example.

Being Vegetarian, a choice for myself, for my own reasons, with no judgement on others for what their choices are, that being the key "their choices" We all have them to make. But....

I think when one feels strongly about something (for what ever their reasons are) an example with no words is deafening, words with no example are just that. Its so easy to spout what "others" should and should not do. But "what example do you show" Your point a very good one, where did that cod fillet come from that was eaten for dinner? :O)

I am sure you moved past and are way over it by now. (Sorry so slow to catch up on my favorite blogs.)

I must disagree with you. I don't think you are an idiot or a twat. (That is slang word for a woman's private part down yonder here in America) So I am pretty sure you are not that.

Passionate, earthy, witty guy with a heart of gold. Yes.

Just read and comment at my blog.
:-) Problem solved.

Tex - it's a very fine line sometimes between inviting a discussion and inciting an argument.

I'd hate to think I would ever stick my head above the parapet based on just my own personal opinion. I'd deserve to get it shot off!. :-o

Crow - you are kind but I've been called many names for 'female private parts' LOL.

I come to your blog when I want get some inspiration, drive and enthusiasm (it's hard to keep up with superwoman)x.

I came back to clarify, I thought perhaps the way I worded my comment you would think I meant "you" when in fact I should have worded it "a person" not you.

I just find it interesting when people or groups will get so worked up over animals being raised commercially, caught commercially etc. Then go each week to the grocery store and fill their baskets with the very products they are carrying on so over.

Its the same with all the chemicals and disease causing things being put in our foods, dishes, geesh you name it, seems like everyone is in agreement when they talk, these things so should not be in our food, but yet they buy them. Food companies will stop using them FDA approved or not, when we do not buy them. :O)

ok now I am feeling real wordy geesh I don't know may have to re-think my example only with few words thinking. Obviously I did here tee hee :O)...

Chris said...

Tex - hehe, I got your gist, so don't panic! It's a bigger picture when you peel back the layers isn't it, I totally agree.

There have been a few fireworks flying about too just lately on friends blogs regarding the rearing of livestock for the table. Like you say, seems alot of people would rather go to the supermarket and buy a 'pack' of meat than deal with the honest reality of where it might actually come from.

See, I've got all wordy now - must be catching ;-)
